The businesses that make money with the heat

Hot weather stimulates the use of electricity, makes fans disappear from the shelves, and increases the sales of drinks and ice creams

Some of the sectors of the economy celebrate when temperatures rise. During these days when temperatures surpass 30 degrees in the majority of Brazil, there are businesses which already begin to see an increase in sales.

One of these is the electric sector, which celebrates the increase in the consumption of electricity due to the intense use of air-conditioning. On November 14th, the Operador Nacional do Sistema Elétrico (ONS) informed that the demand for electricity reached 101,5 gigawatts (GW), the highest ever recorded in Brazil.

Excess consumption has forced the activation of more thermoelectric plants since the 13th of November and will lead to an increase in the electricity bill. The increase may be of at least 5% in comparison to the value paid in the same period last year, according to an estimate made by the Associação Brasileira das Empresas de Serviços de Conservação de Energia (Abesco).

Another business boosted by the hot weather was the sale of fans. According to an article published in the Folha de S. Paulo, it has become hard to find air circulators in large retailers. Most stores are already out of stock. According to data from Buscapé, the search for devices such as air-conditioning, humidifiers, and fans grew 109.4% in just one week in Brazil.

Beer sales are also on the increase. According to the Associação Brasileira de Bares e Restaurantes (Abrasel), hot days should increase the sale of beverages, especially beer, by up to 40%. For bars, this means an increase in revenue of around 15%.

Along the same lines, ice cream sales rose. According to the Associação Brasileira das Indústrias e do Setor de Sorvetes (Abis), there will be a 30% increase in the number of sales. According to the Exame website, the Sorvetes Rochinha brand saw a 200% increase in sales during the first 12 days of November compared to the same period the previous year.

While some suffer with the heat, others celebrate. 🙂
