The international concert season in Brazil boosted the services sector in November, according to the Pesquisa Mensal de Serviços (PMS), Monthly Services Survey, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), on January 16th.

Between October and November, the volume of services in the country increased by 0.4%. The positive number was achieved after three months of decline.

According to the IBGE, growth was achieved by the increase in three of the main monitored activities: other services (3.6%), which includes financial, sewage and real estate activities; services provided to families (2.2%), which represent accommodation, food, culture, leisure and sports activities; and administrative and complementary professional services, with technical, legal, administrative and business functions.

According to Rodrigo Lobo, manager of PMS, the activities represented in the services provided to families were positively impacted by musical concerts, such as The Eras Tour, Taylor Swift’s tour, which passed through the country. The singer held six concerts in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and brought together an average audience of 50 thousand people a day. Apart from her, artists such as RBD, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul McCartney and Roger Waters came to Brazil in November.

Information and communication services and transport and postal services, the two other segments contemplated in the sector, showed a drop in their numbers:

Annual result

Between January and November 2023, the services sector recorded an increase of 2.7% compared to the same period of the previous year. The number indicates that the country should end 2023 with annual growth for the third consecutive year, after a large drop in 2020 (-7.8%), generated by the restrictions imposed by the covid-19 pandemic. In 2021, there was an expansion of 10.9%; in 2022, 8.3%.
